BIRDS IN HAWAI'I
As with most areas, sites and accessibility to them often changes in Hawai'i. With
much of the land area privately owned or under protection in one form or another, it can often be difficult to
know exactly where to go to maximise birding opportunities. These pages are not intended as an exhaustive gazetteer,
rather as a guide to the more productive sites in the Islands. It also intends to highlight lesser-known sites,
as well as the more well-known, as these "major" sites are well covered in other publications. More detailed
accounts of birding spots can be found in several books on Hawaiian Birds and Birdwatching, such as Enjoying Birds
and other wildlife in Hawai'i by H.Douglas Pratt. A list of other books can be found on the Recommended Reading Page.
Species listed are colour-coded: Blue = Endemic or
Endemic Race; Green = Introduced; Black = Indigenous, Migrant or Vagrant and Light
Blue = Non-Avian Oceanic Species.
If you visit a site and find that there is a change in access, habitat, ownership
or species of birds present, please send an E mail so the site can be updated. E mail: birdinghawaii@yahoo.com
