BIRDING HAWAII

Birds, Birdwatching and Wildlife in the Hawaiian Islands

Aloha

The Birding Hawaii website is intended as an up-to-date resource on birds and birdwatching in the Hawaiian Islands, the Fiftieth State of the United States of America - the Aloha State.

It is hoped that this site will provide information for a more enjoyable birdwatching or wildlife trip to the Islands and make it easier for visitors to see many of Hawai'i's interesting native and non-native species of birds and other flora and fauna. It is also hoped that the site will help highlight the many problems that Hawai'i's native birds face in the ever-changing environment that man has created in historically-recent times, and highlight the conservation efforts which are being undertaken in the Islands to help stop and ultimately reverse the trend of extinction in the most isolated archipelago in the World. Hawai'i's native wildlife today probably needs more help than ever before.

The site should help guide you to the birds (and other wildlife) that can be encountered in the State and where and when to best observe each species. Some such as the introduced Japanese Whiteeye are so common that few birders will have trouble seeing the species, whereas some, such as the endemic Palila have small populations and a limited distribution and require more effort and knowledge to locate and observe them. Articles are included on endemic and interesting species which can be observed in the State, as well as articles on identification, occurrence, behaviour, conservation, taxonomy and other related subjects.

The Recommended Reading page as well as directing visitors to useful publications also acts as an informal bibliography for the site, with information contained within used to strengthen personal observations by Hawaiian birders, ecologists and conservationists. The Links page provides details of sites that may be of further interest to visitors.

Special Thanks to Jack Jeffrey and Jim Denny for supplying many of the sites photographs, please check out their web sites by clicking on any of their photos. All photographs on BirdingHawaii are copyrighted by the contributing photographers and may require permission from the photographer to be reproduced, downloaded or used in any fashion.

Most photographs on the site are linked to the photographer's website or E- mail, except where none is available or requests for non-inclusion have been made. All photographers retain © copyright of their photographs. Those photographs not credited to a photographer are © by Christian Melgar.

Also many thanks to all those birders and naturalists in Hawai'i who have helped, contributed and guided in the understanding and appreciation of Hawai'i's birds and their habitats, special thanks go to the following birders in Hawai'i who provide up-to-date sightings of migrants, vagrants and resident species: David Kuhn and Jim Denny (Kaua'i), Peter Donaldson, Richard May, Eric Vanderwerf and Chad Castle (O'ahu), Lance Tanino (Maui) and Reggie David, Jack Jeffrey and Thane Pratt (Hawai'i).

Alternative taxonomic orders and nomenclature for most species occurring in Hawai'i can be found on the Avibase Website. References used on the site can be found by clicking here.
