ARTICLES ON HAWAIIAN BIRDS AND BIRDWATCHING

Jack Jeffrey - Hawai'i's most prolific Bird photographer

A long time resident of the Big Island and a wildlife biologist, Jack Jeffrey is intimately familiar with Hawaii's hidden valleys and remote rainforests. He brings to his images the knowledge of 25 years of observation and study of Hawaii's endemic species. Combined with a naturalist's curiosity, a photographer's patience and technical skill, Jack captures the spirit of Hawaii's rare forest birds, plants and other natural treasures in his wonderful photographic images.

Born in New England, Jack moved to Guam in the 1960's where he attended the University of Guam, receiving a Bachelors Degree in Biology and entered the graduate school program. He worked for four years as a wildlife biologist for Guam Fish and Game and travelled throughout the Pacific photographing island flora and fauna and developing an interest in bird photography.

He moved to Hawaii in 1974 and began a life dedicated to the protection and preservation of Hawaii's endemic birds. He is currently the wildlife biologist at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island.

Jack is co-author of two books on Hawai'i's birds with Hawai'i's foremost ornithologist, H Douglas Pratt. The books, "Hawai'i's Beautiful Birds" and "A Pocket Guide to Hawai'i's Birds" have been on Hawai'i's "best seller" list since their first printing in 1996. Jack's bird and natural history photographs have been featured in such publications as National Geographic (Canon Endangered Species Series), Audubon Magazine, National Wildlife, Smithsonian, Natural History, Life, Time, and Newsweek, Birding, Wild Bird, Hana Hou! and Hawaii, as well as in numerous textbooks, calendars and postcards.

In August 2002 Jack was awarded the Sierra Club's prestigious "Ansel Adams" award, for his work on photographing Hawai'i's indigenous species, more details can be found by Clicking Here.
